SIRT1: A Potential Therapeutic Target in Autoimmune Diseases
Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a member of the class III family of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-dependent histone deacetylases, has been reported to participate in the progression of several diseases. SIRT1 also regulates inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, immune responses, cellular differentiation, proliferation and metabolism, and its altered functions are likely involved in Ads.Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-dependent histone deacetylase, has been reported to participate in regulating various biological processes, such as energetic homeostasis (5), inflammation, oxidative stress (6), mitochondrial biogenesis (7), cell apoptosis (8), and autophagy SIRT1 in the pathogenesis of Ads, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), multiple sclerosis (MS), etc.
To date, the etiology and pathogenesis of these diseases have remained invariably unknown, and complex and diverse elements associated with the environment, genetic risk factors, mental factors, and infection, which can cause an imbalance in autoimmune processes and immunological tolerance
